Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) (1786-1864)

Play: Higashiyama Sakura Sôshi

Play Description:  A Kabuki play about political protest. In fact it is the only play of its kind, and concerns the plight of farmers subjugated and squeezed dry through crippling taxes imposed on them by corrupt, money-hungry samurai officials. (Kabuki 21)

Scene: Chuko Kagamiyama (Loyalty and Valor on Mirror Mountain)

Actors: Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Asakura Togo (right), in the presence of his wife O-Mine, played by Onoe Kikujiro II and his children, who are tied by ropes. The torture is under the supervision of Orikoshi Daizen Masatomo, played by Bando Hikosaburo (centre), who holds a sword to a child’s throat. The scene is observed by Nagayoshi, also perfomed by Hikosaburo (left), and Otani Tomoemon as the courtier Goheita.
